There are currently several approaches to determining a person's color type. The most widespread is the seasonal method, which divides appearances into four color types: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

Over time, the seasonal system was expanded. This gave rise to methodologies covering 12 color types, as well as the directional approach. These systems aim to account for additional characteristics of a person's appearance: contrast level, colour temperature, depth, and brightness.

Most of these methodologies are based on draping — holding various fabric swatches up to the face. By comparing the visual effect of different shades, the specialist uses their visual perception to determine which colours work in harmony with a person's appearance and which create a visual imbalance.

The limitations of intuitive methods

Despite the widespread use of draping-based methodologies, traditional approaches to determining color type come with a number of limitations.

The core issue is the high degree of subjectivity involved in the analysis, which frequently leads to errors when identifying a person's color type.

▶ Within these methodologies, an assessment of someone's appearance is built entirely on the specialist's intuitive perception while working with scarves and ready-made palettes — with no clear, objective criteria to guide the analysis.

Traditional methods of determining color type rely on fairly broad, generalised categories. When analysing an appearance, the specialist often depends on visual perception, personal experience, and intuition. As a result, the same person's appearance can be assigned to different color types by different specialists.

This subjectivity reduces the accuracy and reproducibility of colour-type analysis results. Without shared, objective criteria, the process of identifying a color type becomes inconsistent and prone to error.

Human vision perceives and interprets colour at the level of sensation. This means that colour perception is largely subjective, shaped by individual physiology, lighting conditions, and the surrounding environment — so the very same colour can genuinely look different to different people.
